Dual-boiler espresso machines are characterized—as the name suggests—by two boilers. However, on this page we also list other systems that consist of a combination of a boiler and a thermoblock or thin-film heater. What they have in common is that both boilers are individually controllable heating systems. The brew boiler, for example, operates at a solid brew temperature of 93°, while the steam boiler operates at 120 degrees. In the ideal case, this guarantees performance, consistency, and parallel steaming while brewing. Espresso machines with a boiler and a second, different heating unit, we call multi-heating systems or in the table combo thermo-boiler or combo thin-film boiler.

What is a dual-boiler?
Dual-boiler espresso machines have separate boilers for heating the brew water and for generating the steam to foam the milk. By separating the boilers, the brew water for espresso preparation can be perfectly tempered. The steam boiler is instead set to high pressure ranges and temperatures without affecting the brew temperature.
Dual-boiler espresso machines are typically used in gastronomic settings. Some manufacturers also offer dual-boiler machines with one group for home use.

Why do our tests take so long?
Our comprehensive test protocol requires several weeks per machine. Additionally, we purchase all test devices ourselves, which is why we have to balance different price segments. Quality over quantity – that's how you get honest, independent test reports.

Single-group dual-boiler in gastronomy
Powerful single dual-boilers such as the GS3 or Eagle One Prima are definitely suitable for use in gastronomy. Here, mainly professional-grade components are installed in the machine, which also allow for higher frequencies.
Choosing an espresso machine with just one group can definitely make sense, especially if it's unclear how strong customer interest in coffee is. If coffee becomes an interesting revenue area, the one machine can be supplemented with a second one.
If there are periods in the morning or evening when fewer customers drink coffee, you can work with one machine. This saves electricity and cleaning. Also, in the evening one machine or group can be cleaned and turned off. Practical.
Two boilers give you temperature control, the rest is up to the recipe. Standard recipe, grind size, and troubleshooting in Preparing espresso.
