We tested 12 dual boiler espresso machines over the past weeks and months side by side. This test series was the most comprehensive we have ever done. Each machine was discussed in its own video. We went into the most important characteristics, worked out differences, strengths and weaknesses.
The present text is a side-by-side comparison of all machines. It appeared in parallel with our detailed test and comparison video of all dual boiler espresso machines.

What did we test with the espresso machines?
We go even further with this test report. In addition to the external workmanship and condition, we tested the milk frothing capability of each machine. The espresso machine test provides information about the power consumption of the dual boilers and shows the temperature constancy during espresso extraction. We show the temperature for each machine from the start of espresso extraction to the endpoint. The temperature and constancy during brewing is crucial for the quality of the coffee. Depending on the intended use, an espresso machine should be consistent over multiple extractions, meaning the first, second, and third espresso. This is especially important if the machine is to be used in a larger household, shared apartment, or party. We call this attribute "catering" or "shared apartment" capability.
The warm-up time of the dual boilers plays an important role not only for early risers. Here we have bad news in advance. The warm-up time of all machines does not differ so significantly that we have a clear test winner. We recommend starting all 12 espresso machines 25 minutes before the first extraction. Only then are the machines really well heated through and some machines even need a little longer.

We used this temperature sensor to measure the brewing temperature in the portafilter. A small valve on the underside releases water so that the resistance corresponds to extracting an espresso.
Why is there no clear dual boiler test winner?
During testing, experimenting, and getting to know the twelve espresso machines in depth, it became clear to us that it would not be right to declare a ranking or test winner. The qualities of the machines are too different, the strengths too varied, and the possible uses differ as well. The tests were mainly conducted by Michel Aeschbacher and me, Benjamin Hohlmann. And even we couldn't finally agree on which machine was the test winner for us in each case.
Michel values a lot of power when frothing milk, and the external condition of the machine as well as high-quality materials play a big role. For Benjamin, temperature constancy over 5 extractions is central, so the espresso machine can also be used well at meetings. And so far we haven't even talked about price-to-performance.
In short, we decided against an absolute ranking and against adding a rating or score per category. Instead, we work out which espresso machines perform best in which category. Based on your own needs, you can then decide which machine best suits you. Sorry we can't make the decision for you.
If there were an espresso machine that really rocks in all categories, we wouldn't hesitate to proclaim it. Unfortunately, there isn't one. Instead, there are only category winners (and losers), Michel's favorites, Benjamin's favorites, and the best price-to-performance machine. Enjoy reading.
Workmanship and external condition
You can argue about aesthetics and external condition. Four machines, however, stand out in our test. A bright spot — also due to beautiful finishes with wooden handles and in black, is the Xenia. The Xenia espresso machine can be assembled modularly and thus not only takes on the desired look, but also the expansion design. By choice, the Xenia comes with one or two portafilters, in wood or classic or even bottomless. Each modularity costs separately — at the same time, you are not burdened with unnecessary tools and gadgets. If you're looking for sharp edges on the Xenia, you'll look in vain.

The Rocket Mozzafiato Cronometro R breaks the cost structure with +2000 euros/2400 CHF out of our ranking. Correspondingly, it shows off with material. The side panels made of solid aluminum are 8 mm thick and contribute to the valuable appearance of the Mozzafiato. The workmanship is overall good and there are only a few sharp edges. The sturdy feet provide stability and the cold-touch milk wand rounds out the machine. A built-in clock is a nice additional touch. The Quick Mill Andreja Premium PID also ranks among the better-processed machines. You can tell from it, as with the previously mentioned, that part of the higher purchase price goes into clean edges and well-thought-out finishing.
The Lelit Mara X is among the cheapest machines in the entire test. All the more gratifying that it doesn't skimp on external condition. The machine is just 22 cm wide with a depth of 41 cm. Those looking for a powerfully designed espresso machine will favor the Bezzera Magica or Rocket Mozzafiato, for example. The Lelit Mara X is different. It has rounded corners where other machines are angular. It's as quiet as a purring kitten, while the Rocket Appartamento next to it sounds like a tractor starting. But in terms of external workmanship, the Mara plays up front. The side walls of the Mara are noticeably thinner than, say, the walls of a Quick Mill Rubino — they feel a bit tinny when you tap them. This doesn't detract from the positive external appearance.

Solid exteriors we get from the Profitec Pro 500, the Quick Mill Rubino, Bezzera Magica, Rocket Appartamento (embarrassing plastic railing — that's an outrage!), Elba, and ECM Mechanika Slim.
With the two cheaper machines, the ACM Homey and BZ10, you can see and feel the price point. Here corners were cut on many edges and not all metal was cleanly deburred. You can get annoyed about it, or let it go. Because what remains is: while there are sharp spots, both machines are capable of brewing good espresso. We think: better that way than the other way around.
Water tank — lonely top spot
We probably would have skipped this chapter if there weren't such a clear top contender. The Xenia espresso machine leaves all other dual boilers far behind in terms of water tank flexibility. You could also say that the machine's developers, Holger Dreißig, are the only ones who took the water tank seriously and sought out smart solutions.
Freestanding espresso machines have no problem with refilling. But there are settings where a water tank cannot be removed from the top and can also be filled with difficulty with a jug. And filling with a jug is problematic anyway because it always carries the risk of submerging the espresso machine.

The water tank on the Xenia can be removed from the side. Very practical.
The Xenia offers — as an optional expansion variant — a side insert. The water tank can be taken out of the machine to the left or right and filled accordingly. This is very convenient in a tight kitchen or narrow use situation like a caravan.
By the way, the insert variant is also practical because cups placed on the machine are not blocked. Good solutions to allow filling or removal from above are provided by the Bezzera Magica, Profitec Pro 500, and the ECM Mechanika Slim. The lid can be removed from the rail with cups. Many other machines offer reduced cup space and have a lid attached.
The most unpleasant water tank removal is offered by the ACM Homey (Video 11:25). Since there is no handle and the slot next to the water tank is too small to reach into, removing the tank is a cramp. The water tank removal of the Elba 969 is also among the poorly thought-out variants. First all cups must be covered, then a plastic grid and finally a lid must be removed. The handles on the water tank are flimsy and so again the finger-water canister cramp follows.

Included tamper
A portafilter is good when it closes flush with the edge of the basket and the metal base sinks so deep that you can feel the edge of the basket with the flush base using your fingers. The tamper of the Lelit Mara X does this best. The tamper is similar to some professional tampers and at 58.5 mm diameter is the ideal size. Clever about it is that only the bottom ring has exactly this diameter. This way the tamper closes cleanly with the wall of the basket at the pressing surface. At the same time, the tamper doesn't sit so tightly that a vacuum forms when you pull it out. Many flush tampers suck the perfectly tamped grounds back up and create potential channeling spots.
The two Quick Mill models also include a wooden tamper. However, the standard 58mm size leaves too much space to the edge. Too bad, the base itself has good thickness and helps with level tamping.
The tamper of the ECM Mechanika Slim and Profitec Pro 500 is pleasing in workmanship and also sits almost perfectly in the portafilter. It fits more flush than the Rocket and Quick Mill tampers. However, the thickness of the tamper's base is somewhat less, which is why the tamper sinks into the portafilter during tamping. This makes it harder to guide the tamper straight.
The two Rocket models each come with an aluminum tamper. The distance to the basket edge is too large. Handling and aesthetics are certainly a matter of taste. For larger hands, the tamper is too small. The upper pressure point has a straight edge unlike the other tampers. Less pleasant — but certainly not a deal-breaker. The tamper next to the Rocket Appartamento feels appropriate. With the Rocket Mozzafiato in the upper price segment of portafilters, a higher-quality tamper would have made a good impression.
The other espresso machines are supplied without a tamper or without something that deserves such a name. Many machines have a plastic token tamper in the package contents. However, this is a bad joke alongside a high-quality dual boiler machine. With the Xenia, purchasing a tamper is optional. We find that makes sense.
A portafilter manufacturer doesn't have to be a tamper manufacturer. But if they supply a tamper, please supply a decent one. Tampers are often collector's pieces and are bought separately anyway. There are many great tampers from small manufacturers, e.g. from Tidaka, Hauck, Prorista.
Portafilters of the espresso machines
Portafilters and baskets are important tools for the brewing process. They differ in handling, tamping ability, and also in the quality of the baskets. In many videos we have discussed that a good portafilter positions the outlets away from the espresso machine. The main reason is that only then can you tamp at the table edge, which is the best option in everyday life. It's quick, it's clean, and the portafilter doesn't have to be awkwardly threaded into a tamping station and potentially loosen the grounds again.

In the variant on the left, you can easily slip while tamping and ruin the cake.
Our perspective is "gastronomy"-oriented. We've installed tamping stations in coffee bars, but ultimately the barista always tamped on the edge of the bar on a tamping mat. This is always possible with gastronomy machines since the outlets are positioned accordingly.
The outlets of the portafilters of the following machines make tamping easier.
- ECM Mechanika Slim. What's unfortunate, however, is that the outlet is very wide and the espresso flickers as it flows, flowing from left to right. This has no taste impact, but sometimes looks like channeling and doesn't provide such nice photos. 😊
- The Xenia Espresso tamper is chic — we got a great wooden finish. You pay extra for it, but it makes quite an impression. The outlets are positioned in our desired direction, but are also just as wide as the ECM Mechanika Slim, which can lead to the described flickering effect.
- One of the most beautiful tampers in the field comes with the Profitec Pro 500. "Assembled the right way", sharp outlets, and it feels good in the hand.
- Similarly, the portafilter of the Elba.969 and the ACM Homey are pleasing. Both have matte portafilters that feel good in the hand.

The portafilter of the Lelit Mara X breaks away from the framework of classic portafilters. The espresso is released towards the back and then flows forward and is visible. Michel's and my opinions differ on this. Michel finds the portafilter "too futuristic". I like that Lelit was once more creative and offers new solutions. It looks great how the espresso flows forward and becomes visible. While you can't tamp the Lelit portafilter at the table edge either. But since the outlets don't rest on the ground, they don't get dirty and carry coffee particles with them that later end up in the espresso. This is one of our main arguments against tamping with a standing tamper. Additionally, classic portafilters tilt and it's hard to tamp straight. However, the Lelit portafilter stands straight — this problem doesn't exist.
The portafilter outlets of the other machines are twisted and make tamping more difficult. They are otherwise "classic", although the portafilter of the Bezzera Magica deviates in shape.

The twisted portafilter outlets are directly related to the size of the drip tray. The further a drip tray extends from the espresso machine, or the closer the brew group is to the body of the machine, the less risk there is of water dripping in front of the machine during rinsing and extraction. Besides the BZ10, the Rocket Appartamento and the Bezzera Magica drip on the table surface when rinsing.
Noise level of the espresso machines
Does the noise level of an espresso machine play a big role? Not for the quality of the espresso. But those who have already skipped the morning espresso because the rest of the house is still sleeping know how interesting a quiet espresso machine can be. However, it should be noted with a caveat: almost every espresso grinder is louder. So the noise level of the espresso machine may be less relevant. For some, the Rocket Appartamento, which leads the noise field at 83 decibels, might even sound good. Along the lines of: even if I race off on my motorcycle, I want the rest of the village to know about it.

For the record: we measured the noise level rather amateurishly with the phone, maintaining the same distance. Don't pin us down on the decibels. The values still give you an orientation. For all sound-sensitive people: here's the file to listen to yourself.
Power consumption and energy efficiency
As with all electrical devices, the actual power consumption of espresso machines can hardly be read from the power consumption specifications. With the Lelit Mara X, for example, it's 1400 W and with the Rocket Appartamento 1200 W. However, these values indicate the consumption at full power. We were interested in how this looks over several hours of operation and what fluctuations occur with which machine.
For the measurement, we used power meters from mystrom. With the appropriate app, we got the following values.

How should the power consumption table of espresso machines be read? The machine is warmed up for 25 minutes. Subsequently, according to the temperature measurement test instructions (see below), extraction of 5 double espressos at approximately 1-minute intervals is simulated. After this simulation is complete, the power consumption is recorded. Then, 2 hours later, a double espresso is simulated (5 s rinse / 30 seconds water extraction) and the power consumption is recorded. After another 2 hours, a double espresso is also simulated and the machine is cleaned. For this, backflush 4 seconds long 5 times. After that the machine is turned off and the power consumption is recorded.
The Lelit Mara X is the only machine in the test with ECO mode. More and more machines are being built with eco mode. The ECO mode of the Lelit Mara X kicks in after 30 minutes and stops active boiler heating. In everyday life this is admittedly sometimes annoying if you just miss the 30-minute window. One reason we can't imagine the Lelit Mara X as a training machine in our Home Barista Courses.
It's interesting that the machine doesn't consume more power despite multiple warm-ups than other machines. The insulated boiler contributes greatly to preventing a large temperature drop and so after two hours there is still plenty of temperature in the boiler. In fact, the machine was also usable again after just 5 minutes (normally it heats up for 25 minutes). Over the length of the test, the power efficiency of the Lelit Mara X keeps getting better.
Also scoring well are the Xenia Espresso and the BZ10, the two machines that DO NOT have a classic Faema E61 brew group with circulating thermosiphon principle. Both machines have electrically heated brew heads. From an energy technical point of view, this principle shows the potential. The Xenia Espresso also demonstrates that an appropriately designed brew head in no way harms temperature constancy. Particularly poor performers are machines with large boilers and those without insulation.

Milk foam and frothing ability and cappuccino power
Dual boiler espresso machines stand out from single boiler machines in that espresso can be extracted and milk frothed in parallel. How quickly the milk gets hot, how much power each machine brings to the 0.6L jug while frothing, and how frothing feels overall, we compared.
Michel Aeschbacher has each time locked in the espresso and started the extraction. After 10 seconds of runtime, he briefly released the condensation from the milk wand. After about 17 seconds we started frothing.
In the direct comparison of the machines, we've also gathered new insights for ourselves. The indicated boiler pressure is not 1:1 to be understood as force on the milk wand. Some machines felt rather powerless while frothing despite a display of +1 bar, while other espresso machines still delivered decent pressure at 0.8 bar.
Regardless of pressure, some machines heated the milk faster than others. Basically, this allows longer frothing before the milk gets too hot. This extends the draw and roll phases and tends — especially for Latte Art beginners — to be an advantage, namely more time. The ideal performance is: powerful pressure while slow heating at the same time.
Frothing ability in direct comparison
The Rocket Appartamento froths with a lot of force. It's enjoyable to froth, easily spins the whole jug and yet the milk doesn't heat too quickly. Good for beginners and professionals.
The Lelit Mara X has less force than the Appartamento. However, the pressure built up is absolutely suitable for frothing. At the same time, the milk heats relatively slowly. Pretty good for beginners.
With the ACM Homey, real force comes from the milk wand. It froths quickly hot. Needs some practice.
The Bezzera BZ10 also has real power and easily gets the milk to spin, even if the perfect point in the jug isn't found. Very well suited for frothing for ambitious beginners and professionals.
The Elba 1 from 969.coffee also delivers solid performance. Michel's statement: "It maybe heats up a bit quicker and at the same time has less pressure. But that's more of a felt statement." Overall good and we have nothing to complain about.
The Bezzera Magica also puts in good performance. Plenty of power and a nice roll phase are guaranteed. It also gets quite warm fairly quickly.
Parallel milk frothing while extracting doesn't go smoothly with the Xenia.
The Xenia Espresso we studied the most in terms of milk foam. It already had difficulties during our first test allowing simultaneous brewing and frothing. The Xenia has two modes: the classic espresso mode, which delivers very consistent temperature and correspondingly good espressos, and a heating mode. If you press the start button while extracting to the right, espresso mode runs. With a button press to the left, the Xenia heats up while extracting espresso and stabilizes the pressure in the boiler.
In espresso mode, the boiler pressure drops to below 0.5 bar. Difficult to nearly impossible to froth milk that way. The milk can't get proper movement and so many large bubbles remain on the milk.
In heating mode, the pressure is more stable and no longer drops below 0.5 bar. It's then easier to froth. Compared to the other machines tested, frothing performance is still at the lower end of the table. However, the manufacturer is constantly working on workarounds and is very close to the user community. Those for whom milk frothing is more important than espresso performance can improve the setting with a firmware change. However, it seems more sensible to us to wait longer after extracting the espresso so that the pressure in the boiler stabilizes. The milk foam performance improves significantly this way, if not well.
The Profitec Pro 500 has markedly less performance than the other Faema E61 brew groups. Michel compares the frothing behavior to the Xenia key combination to the left (heating mode). Interesting for us: the indicated boiler pressure stays high. However, we feel little of that in the jug.
Michel had frothing fun with the Quick Mill Rubino. Nice roll phase, good circulation. You can make good milk foam that way.
At the top of the flagpole, the Rocket Mozzafiato Cronometro R gives gas. Frothing is powerful but also gets hot fairly quickly. Definitely interesting for ambitious users.
The ECM Manufacture Mechanika V Slim delivers solid frothing performance. "Not much and not little," Michel sums up the frothing.
The Quick Mill Andreja Premium PID lines up at the lower end of the table with Xenia and Profitec. The pressure is too low to get the milk into full rotation. Since we're already at the upper limit with brew temperature, we can't increase the boiler pressure any further.
How is milk frothed?
In the first phase of frothing we bring temperature and volume into the milk. Air is incorporated and bubbles form. This part of frothing is called the draw phase.
In the second and subsequent roll phase, the bubbles formed are broken down and the milk foam becomes creamy-silky and shiny. This consistency is very well suited for pouring Latte Art on a cappuccino.
Temperature constancy during extraction and from extraction to extraction
To brew very good espresso, temperature constancy during the brewing phase is the alpha and omega. In an article and video, Phillipp Schallberger and Michel Aeschbacher worked that out. In their comparison test they recommend an average brewing temperature of 93 degrees. At temperatures of 88 degrees, the tasted coffees tasted unpleasantly sour, harsh, and had an astringent aftertaste. Channeling also increased. At temperatures of 96 degrees, the bitterness was overflowing and at the same time the sourness was no longer integrated. The texture decreased, even though the concentration of dissolved coffee particles (TDS, strength) increased.

Within our test series, we investigated two things.
- Constancy during extraction. We noted how much the temperature deviates during one extraction from the 1st to the last second. As a sample extraction, we examined the second of five extractions.
- Family, shared apartment, and catering suitability. Those who only want one espresso are less dependent on the third and fourth espresso being at the target temperature. But if a larger household extracts several espressos in a row in the morning, temperature constancy over multiple extractions matters. It's also important to give users confidence. If temperature fluctuates constantly, it unsettles during brewing.
How constant does temperature remain over 25 seconds?
To measure constancy along the brewing time, we compared temperature at three temperature points and considered the difference after 5 seconds, after 13 seconds, and after 22 seconds.
In the first few seconds, the coffee grounds are saturating and the actual brew temperature at the sensor must first be reached.

Overall, it can be said that almost all machines deliver surprisingly good temperature constancy during the brewing time. Particularly noteworthy are the Rocket Appartamento with a fluctuation of only 0.17 degrees between second 5 and 22. The Bezzera Magica ranks in with a difference of -0.18 degrees. Additionally, the Xenia (switch right), the Rocket Mozzafiato, the Elba 1, the Quick Mill Rubino, and also the ACM Homey deliver good results, with less than 0.5 degree fluctuations during extraction. This is sensational and much better than we expected a few months ago.
The Quick Mill Andreja (0.53), the ECM Manufacture Mechanika V Slim (0.87), and the Lelit Mara X (0.89) also deliver good results. The Bezzera BZ10 comes in at 1.02 and the Profitec Pro 500 at -1.44 — all completely in order. With the Profitec Pro 500, it should be noted that this drop occurs right at the end of extraction, where there's not much substantial left to extract from the grounds anyway. It's possible that with one or another coffee this temperature drop at the end could even have positive effects.
Important notes: for the measurement we used the second espresso as the basis. We recommend using the first extraction to heat through the portafilter and rinse the shower to remove any residue from the cleaning powder.
The measurements were performed after the temperature adjustment of the machines. A real criticism is that some espresso machines were not supplied with sufficient brewing temperature. While you can relatively easily adjust a PID controller yourself, although you don't exactly know what temperature you'll end up at at home, we had to adjust the pressure and thus the temperature via the pressostat on the Bezzera BZ 10, Bezzera Magica, and ACM Homey. We would advise you to buy these machines exclusively from your local dealer and have them guarantee that the temperature was checked on site!
Constancy over 5 extractions
"Who needs 5 extractions anyway," you may rightly ask. That's 10 espressos after all. Yes, but…
Do you know at what temperature you are if it's constantly rising and falling?! The Rocket Appartamento is a good example. The second extraction was nearly perfect in terms of constancy and temperature. While the first extraction had an average temperature of 93.98 degrees, extraction 5 was only at an average of 90.32 degrees. The Rocket thus performed in the mid-field of dual boilers. Rather a machine for two to three extractions and one that needs to be learned and understood.

In comparison, the Xenia, when pressing the extraction button to the right, resembles a straight line that increases by just 0.88 degrees temperature over 5 extractions.

Even more consistent is the Rocket Mozzafiato, with a temperature loss of 0.47 degrees. However, we have a different, significant criticism point with the Rocket Mozzafiato. At the highest boiler temperature, namely 124 degrees on the PID control, the machine delivered us only 90.48 degrees on the 1st extraction. That's definitely too cold. Since a thermostat isn't installed — but a PID control with sensor — we also couldn't turn up the temperature ourselves, which harmed the quality of the espresso. Lots of sourness — not tasty!

In terms of constancy over multiple extractions, these three machines are in a league of their own. With just over two degrees fluctuation following the BZ10, the Bezzera Magica -2.12, and the ECM Mechanika V Slim with -2.21 degrees.

The ACM Homey (3.28), the Andreja (-2.33), the Appartamento (-3.65) play in the mid-field. Performing worst with both switch positions (steam and brew mode) is the Lelit Mara X.

The performance of the Lelit Mara X in particular is of course problematic, especially since it shows such good performance in so many other categories. It's worth learning this machine — and the other machines that lose temperature — very well in order to get everything out of them.
Those who buy one of the consistent machines like the Xenia, the Mozzafiato, or also Bezzera Magica, know where they stand and with less searching find the right temperature.
Warm-up time of the espresso machine
The warm-up time of the espresso machine sometimes decides in the morning whether you'll be awake or asleep. So it's important! Bad news: if you're waiting next to the espresso machine for the first shot, you shouldn't buy a dual boiler. Unfortunately, we can't give you the all-clear. No machine is significantly faster to heat up than the magical 25-minute threshold. Sorry!
Most likely to be at reasonable brew temperature is the Xenia Espresso after 18 minutes. However, we also measure only 88 degrees at that point, and that's not really tasty. If you're really serious about the first espresso, wait your 25 minutes. Our Xenia model has a heating element built into the brew group. There's also the option to use a second element, and then the whole thing should go faster.

Otherwise, our conclusion on warm-up time. Wait 25 minutes, set a timer, or buy a thermoblock. With dual boilers, it takes time for the boiler and brew group to really reach temperature. If that stresses you out, then it's not the right machine for enjoying.
