The ECM Mechanika V Slim is a dual boiler made in Germany – specifically from Heidelberg. We purchased the machine ourselves, tested it over several weeks, and measured everything: temperature, pressure, build quality. As always: independent, to the best of our knowledge and belief. Design & Build Quality – Compact and Solid
At just 25 cm wide, the ECM Mechanika V Slim is indeed slim. The height is just over 44 cm, and the depth is around 40 cm. Despite its compact dimensions, the machine weighs a hefty 27 kilos – it sits solidly on the counter with no wobbling when securing the portafilter.
The build quality looks impressive visually. The housing appears seamless – no obvious welding seams like some competitors have. The side panels feel high-quality, with a cleanly finished surface. Two details stand out: we would have preferred the front edge to be a bit more rounded, and the water tank has slightly sharp edges at the front and back. But these are minor details at a high level.
Nicely done: The lid can be completely removed to access the water tank. This works smoothly even with multiple cups on the machine. The tank itself holds 2.8 liters and can be removed without hoses – simply pull it out, fill it, put it back. Practical.
The drip tray is large enough for a day of intensive espresso pulling. Two pressure gauges show boiler pressure and brew pressure. The power switch doesn't get hot – you can turn off the machine without burning yourself.
Heat-Up Time & Boiler System
The ECM Mechanika V Slim takes 25 minutes to fully heat up. This is typical for a dual boiler of this size. The insulated 2.2-liter boiler is not only large but also thick – and additionally insulated. This helps maintain stable temperature and minimize energy loss.
For comparison: The Rocket Mozzafiato also has an insulated boiler, while the Rocket Appartamento does not. Lelit also uses insulation, while the BZ-10 does not. These small but fine differences become noticeable in terms of temperature stability and energy efficiency.
An important note for initial startup: The machine is shipped with an empty boiler. When you first turn it on, the boiler must fill with water first – you'll notice this because the pump runs. Only then does the actual heat-up process begin. By the way, this isn't mentioned in the manual, but it should be obvious: let water run through, flush it out, then you're ready to go.
Unfortunately, we didn't measure power consumption during testing, so we can't provide kWh values here.
Temperature Management – Hot, but Consistent
This is where it gets interesting: The Mechanika V Slim runs at the upper temperature limit. During idle, we occasionally measured up to 97°C. That's too much for a balanced extraction.
The solution: Flush, flush, flush. And do it properly. With a good cooling flush of about 10 seconds, we bring the temperature down to 93–94°C during extraction. That's perfect. During pulling, the temperature remains constant, with a minimal drop of 0.4–0.5°C – negligible.
It's important to understand: there are two types of flushing. First, cleaning the shower screen – that's quick, 2-3 seconds is enough. Second, lowering the temperature (cooling flush) – that takes longer, about 10 seconds. With the Mechanika V Slim, the cooling flush is absolutely essential if you're starting from scratch. Workflow: Prepare the portafilter, tamp, then flush for 10 seconds, then immediately start the extraction.
By the way, this is a characteristic of E61 brew groups – the thermosyphon keeps the group hot, but sometimes too hot. If you're pulling several espressos in a row, you won't have this problem – the temperature stays constant in the ideal range.
Espresso Quality – Balanced and Textured
With the correct flushing technique, the Mechanika V Slim delivers excellent espressos. The brew pressure is a constant 9 bar, slightly above – perfectly set. In testing, we worked with 20.5 grams input and a ratio of about 1:2.3. The result: a concentrated, balanced espresso with strong texture.
The nougat notes come through clearly, and the balance between sweetness and acidity is spot on. No disturbing bitterness, no signs of underextraction or channeling. The machine pulls out everything the coffee has to offer – you can't ask for more.
A pressure gauge is installed, and the Over Pressure Valve (OPV) allows pressure adjustment. But this is usually not necessary – the factory setting is perfect.
Milk Foam & Steam – Slow, but Silky
The steam wand is double-walled and only gets hot at the lower end – no burn risk. When steaming, you notice: the wand seems to have slightly less pressure than other dual boilers, but it still performs flawlessly.
The foam takes a bit longer to reach the right temperature – about five seconds more than machines with more aggressive steam power. That sounds like a disadvantage, but it's actually an advantage, especially for beginners. More time means: better control over the rolling phase, more opportunity to break down bubbles and make the foam properly silky.
The result: creamy, fine-pored milk foam with a glossy surface. Perfect for latte art. Anyone who has to produce ten cappuccinos in a row might find the slower speed impractical – for the home barista, it's ideal.
Workflow & Operation – Thoughtfully Detailed
The Mechanika V Slim makes a good impression in daily use. The portafilter is really heavy – you can feel that quality is built in here. It clicks into place cleanly, with no sloppiness or wobbling.
A detail we particularly like: The machine's feet are narrowly built so you can easily slide a scale underneath. With other machines, the scale often gets in the way – here everything fits.
The water tank can be filled from the top by simply removing the lid. Two lights indicate when the machine is ready to brew and when the tank is empty. Simple, functional, without unnecessary frills.
Portafilter orientation: A point we must explicitly praise – the portafilter spouts point downward when tamping, not upward. This is the correct, hygienic version. Why? Because the spouts don't rest on the counter where there are coffee grounds. Also, you can hold the portafilter more stably when tamping. Anyone who uses a tamping station will appreciate this. Tamping on the feet – as is common with some machines – we consider impractical and unhygienic.
Special Features – E61 Group Without Frills
The ECM Mechanika V Slim uses the classic E61 brew group from Faema. This means: mechanical preinfusion via the thermosyphon, proven technology that has worked for decades.
Additional features like PID control or profiling were deliberately omitted. This keeps the price under 2,000 euros and reduces potential problem areas. The machine does what it's supposed to do – brew espresso and steam milk – and does it at a high level.
The Over Pressure Valve (OPV) is accessible and can be adjusted via a screw in the water tank. However, we recommend leaving the factory setting – 9 bar is ideal.
Verdict – Solid Dual Boiler for Purists
The ECM Mechanika V Slim is a machine for home baristas who value quality and build quality but don't want unnecessary frills. The strengths: high-quality materials, consistent temperature (with proper flushing workflow), excellent espresso quality, thoughtful design.
The weaknesses: The machine runs a bit hot and requires consistent flushing before each pull. The steam performance is somewhat more leisurely – an advantage for beginners, perhaps a disadvantage for busy cappuccino producers. Some edges (water tank, front cover) could be more rounded.
Who is this machine suitable for? For anyone looking for a robust, reliable dual boiler that doesn't need tricks. If you already have experience with espresso preparation and know the workflow, you'll be happy with the Mechanika V Slim. Beginners should be aware that the flushing technique is essential here – but you'll learn it quickly.
Compared to the Lelit Mara, which we also tested and which has its own challenges, the ECM delivers clearer, more consistent performance – provided you master the cooling flush.
