Why We Sell This Tamping Mat in Narrow?

We particularly like the 90° angle on the front of the tamping mat. This supports the grip of the non-slip mat and closes off a typical problem area – the front edge of the table or countertop. With classic tamping mats, the table is only protected from above. However, tamping is often done at the edge. This quickly leads to many dents on the work surface.

What Makes Good Tamping?

"Tamping" refers to pressing down the ground coffee in the portafilter. With pressure of approximately 8 - 15 kg, the ground coffee in the portafilter becomes compressed.

In order to tamp well in the first place, the preparation of the grounds in the filter basket is crucial. If air pockets are trapped or ground coffee is compressed more in some areas than others, the resistance of the coffee cake against water changes.

Good espresso extraction is enabled by even resistance. Lower resistance leads to faster water flow and correspondingly uneven extraction. In the worst case, channeling occurs. With this channel formation, the brew water flows out significantly faster in some areas and therefore over-extraction takes place.
