What is a Single Boiler Espresso Machine?
A circle that gives the machine its name runs through the espresso machine. This is a boiler that provides the water for brewing the espresso. If the single boiler also has a steam wand, the temperature of the boiler must be increased to produce steam pressure.
To produce a cappuccino or latte macchiato, the machine is switched to steam mode after pulling the espresso. Depending on the machine, it takes several seconds to about a minute for the boiler to reach full power.
With single boilers, you generally cannot steam milk parallel to pulling espresso. If you like and use a lot of milk foam, you're usually better off with a dual boiler. A dual boiler allows for simultaneous steaming and espresso extraction.

Frequently Asked Questions About Single Boiler Espresso Machines
How long does it take for a single boiler to heat up?
Depending on boiler size and heating power, most machines need between 10 and 20 minutes to reach full temperature stability.
Can I make a cappuccino with a single boiler?
Yes, absolutely. However, after pulling the espresso, you need to press a button or switch to heat the water in the boiler to steam temperature. This usually takes 30 to 60 seconds.
What is the advantage over a dual boiler?
Single boilers are generally cheaper, more compact, and often more temperature stable when pulling pure espresso, since the brew water comes directly from the boiler and is not heated via a heat exchanger.
