Coffea Futurica Podcast: Gerrit Vorhoff, Carbotech AG & Tobias Milz, Kaffeemacher:innen

With Gerrit Vorhoff from Carbotech AG, a consulting company for environmental calculations, we have created a CO2 calculator for coffee roasteries.

Tobias Milz, our in-house CO2 expert, worked intensively with Gerrit to calculate the carbon footprint of our coffee roastery. The result is a CO2 calculator that we have now made available online and we would like to encourage roasteries to calculate their own carbon footprint.

Most emissions occur where we are not present on a daily basis; in coffee production. So whoever invests in sustainable production conditions has a major lever to make coffee more environmentally friendly.

But a roastery is where it is, it is stationary and requires gas, shipping boxes, packaging materials, you might take flights to coffee-producing countries, and employees commute to work by car.

So what can we as coffee roasteries improve where we are, with what we have, or perhaps what we use excessively? In this conversation, Gerrit and Tobi explain how to create a CO2 calculator in the first place, that CO2 is only one aspect of an environmental analysis, and why we cannot produce products in a climate-neutral way.

Coffee is part of climate change. We all can determine whether it becomes more part of the solution or part of the problem.
