The coffee world has been turned upside down since the Covid pandemic. Delayed shipments, high coffee prices, challenges for producers, traders and roasters. On top of that came frost and drought in Brazil — nothing is the way it was recently. This podcast is meant to be a compass for everyone in the coffee industry to navigate through the coming months.
In this episode: Kleber Cruz, GEPA
In this special edition of our Coffea Economica podcast, I talk with people who analyze the current situation, clarify questions, and raise important new ones. Anyone working with coffee in any capacity is already feeling the changes, or will be within the next few weeks.
Every Sunday evening we publish a new episode of Coffea Economica. In this episode, I talk with Kleber Cruz Garcia from GEPA.
Kleber Cruz, Green Coffee Buyer at GEPA GmbH
In conversation with Philipp Schallberger, Kleber Cruz comments on the current situation as follows:
- "The appeal for producers to make good coffee is not very high right now. The monetary incentive that specialty coffee can offer is currently non-existent, because the price for average coffee is almost the same."
- "At the same time, the number of coffee consumers willing to buy expensive coffee is getting smaller and smaller. And yet many want fair trade — and that only works when prices are in the basement."
- "We can count on the loyalty of our partners. But that doesn't come free, it only comes through long-term commitment. That's the only way."
