The coffee world has been turned upside down since the Covid pandemic. Delayed shipments, high coffee prices, challenges for producers, traders and roasters. Added to this are frost and drought in Brazil — nothing is the way it was just recently. This podcast is meant to be a compass for everyone in the coffee industry to navigate through the coming months.
In this episode: Raphael Studer, algrano
In this special edition of our Coffea Economica podcast, I talk with people who are analyzing the current situation, clarifying questions, and raising important new ones. Everyone who works with coffee in any form is already feeling the changes, or will be within the next few weeks at the latest.
Every Sunday evening we publish a new episode of Coffea Economica. The opening episode features Raphael Studer, co-founder and CEO of algrano.

In conversation with Philipp Schallberger, Raphael Studer analyzes the current situation with sharp precision.
- "Many roasters were only founded in the 2010s. Many roasters know only this downturn. It is mistaken to believe that it will always continue like this."
- "If we were to assume that producers calculated exactly the same way as roasters, then the price would only change due to inflation. As a roaster, I would have to expect that raw coffee would become about 10% more expensive every year."
- "Traders and roasters have trained producers to be price takers and act accordingly. This means that when prices rise, producers naturally accept them too. 'You trained me to be a price taker, and I accept the price that the market now offers.'
