Cleaning your DeLonghi Dedica – Easy step-by-step guide

For many of us, the Dedica is the first and best entry-level espresso machine. But when your espresso suddenly tastes like an old shoe sole instead of a perfectly extracted shot, it’s high time to think about a thorough cleaning.

Often enough, the machine itself is simply to blame—or more precisely: its cleanliness. While the DeLonghi Dedica is a fantastic machine for simple espresso, it still requires regular care. Here, we show you how to easily clean your Dedica—from a quick daily routine to a deeper maintenance check.

    Looking to descale your Dedica?

You can find our detailed step-by-step guide in our article “How to Descale the DeLonghi Dedica”.

The Daily Routine – Quick and Painless

There is a simple golden rule: the cleaner your machine, the better your espresso. That’s why you should clean the machine daily or after every single use.

    1
Clean the portafilter. Remove the portafilter after every use, knock out the spent coffee puck, wipe down the basket, and run hot water through it to purge coffee residue and oils. You can use the espresso machine itself to flush it out. That way, you won't have to carry a dripping portafilter across your kitchen.
    2
Wipe the shower screen. Briefly wipe the shower screen (where hot water hits the coffee bed) with a clean, damp cloth. This prevents nasty coffee oil build-up from forming.

Weekly Cleaning – Digging a Bit Deeper

Once a week, your Dedica deserves a little extra attention. Don’t worry, it’s not rocket science either:

    1. Deep Clean the Filter Basket

    1
Remove the basket from the portafilter using a small tool or the tip of a spoon. If it feels a bit stiff, don’t worry—that’s completely normal. Even if it feels like you’re opening a hidden treasure chest. Unfortunately, that treasure chest is often a hidden dirt collector. Especially if you’re using the original Dedica pressurized portafilter, this cleaning step is vital. Far less grime sticks to a commercial-style metal portafilter.
    2
Clean the basket thoroughly with hot water and a drop of dish soap to completely dissolve coffee oils and residues. This ensures your espresso tastes fresh rather than rancid.

    2. Clean the Brew Group and Gasket

    Caution

Always turn off the machine beforehand and unplug it from the outlet to avoid burning your hands!

Carefully wipe inside the bayonet group head (where the portafilter locks in) with a damp cloth, paying close attention to the rubber group gasket. Ground coffee loves to accumulate here, creating unpleasant off-flavors over time.

    3. Clean the Shower Screen Surface

Run a short flush of hot water and wipe the shower screen with a damp cloth. That is usually more than enough to remove the main build-up.

The Deep Shower Screen Clean – Handle with Care!

Every now and then—we're talking every two to three months—you can unscrew the shower screen for a deep, thorough clean.

    Watch Out for Plastic Threads

The screw thread on the Dedica group head is made of plastic and very delicate. Do not over-tighten when removing or reinstalling it, or you’ll end up needing a service repair.

    1
Carefully unscrew the Phillips head screw on the shower screen.
    2
Clean the shower screen and the surrounding area thoroughly with warm water and mild dish soap. If you haven't cleaned it in a long time, you might uncover some real coffee archaeology—fascinating, but definitely not delicious.
    3
Clean the seals. With the screen removed, the rubber seals are far more accessible. Repeat your weekly routine: thoroughly wipe down the bayonet mechanism and gaskets.
    4
Screw the shower screen back in place—gently and without applying excessive force, otherwise you risk stripping the delicate plastic threads.

Descaling – Essential, but a Topic of Its Own

Extremely important, though we'll keep it brief here: Don’t forget regular descaling! The machine alerts you with an orange indicator light when it’s time. You can find full details on why and how to descale properly in our dedicated guide “How to Descale the DeLonghi Dedica”.

Limescale remains the biggest enemy of your espresso machine and your coffee flavor. In fact, limescale and hard water are responsible for over 80% of all espresso machine defects. It is genuinely worth descaling your Dedica every two to three months, even if the orange warning light hasn't turned on yet.

    Golden Rule for Thermoblock Machines

As long as water is still flowing, you can still descale. If water stops flowing entirely, the descaler can no longer reach the blockage. So don't miss this window—your machine will last much longer!

Verdict – Small Steps, Big Flavor

By following these simple cleaning steps regularly, your Dedica will reward you with genuinely great espresso. A little attention here and there ensures your coffee tastes exactly as delicious as you dream—rather than stale washwater. Give it a try, your tastebuds will thank you!
