How can cafés and roasteries change the coffee world?
Roasters United is an association of smaller roasteries that purchase green coffee together. They are organized as a cooperative, and members take on specific tasks for the different core responsibilities. This year they purchased 20 shipping containers of green coffee from 10 countries, from 13 cooperatives. That's almost 300,000kg of green coffee that was purchased directly, fairly and organically.
With Roasters United, even small roasteries, and yes, even cafés, can take responsibility and have a direct impact on coffee production. Coffees are contracted early and pre-financed at 60%. The model should set an example because it shows that together more is possible.
I spoke with Alex and Nadine about their approach to "socializing cup quality". In short: it's almost too good to be true. But listen for yourself.
Coffee is part of climate change. We all can help determine whether it becomes more part of the solution, or part of the problem.
