The focus is on soil health. The better the soil, the more resilient the coffee plant. We support agricultural approaches that work regeneratively and understand coffee production holistically. This includes the farm's own production of fertilizer, which makes producers more independent of market fluctuations.

The Fazenda Camocim

In the fall of 2023, we visited Fazenda Camocim in Pedra Azul. It is located just about two hours from the port city of Vitória. In no time at all, you leave the sea behind and drive into the forested mountains of Espírito Santo - that is a stark contrast to the Cerrado or Minas Gerais, where there are hardly any forests left, as large-scale deforestation occurred in the mid-20th century. Espírito Santo was also affected, but here reforestation took place and today everyone benefits from it. Fazenda Camocim lies in an intact forest, with coffee plants integrated into the property. Because of the forest and the altitude, the microclimate is noticeably cooler. Here Henrique and Rogelio work on planting new varieties and better understanding the climate.

Why Do We Buy This Coffee?

On one hand, because the coffee brings so much of what we like in a strong and multifaceted espresso. Especially when combined with milk, this coffee shines. On the other hand, because the work of Fazenda Camocim has important influence for the entire region, indeed for Brazilian coffee production as a whole. Coffee production in agroforestry systems is extremely rare in Brazil - which is precisely why it is important for us to support the forces that demonstrate that it is possible.

Why Does Henrique Taste the Way It Does?

Coffees from Espírito Santo, eastern Brazil, grow at considerable altitude by local standards. The coffee brings quite a bit of complexity due to the slowed growth. The bean is hard and thus can also handle a somewhat more developed roast. For our standards, we have roasted this coffee rather dark to obtain a more classic espresso. However, through the washed process and slow drying, the coffee retains its fine acidity and balances out this heavy coffee.

Shipping Also Available as Coffee Letter

All our coffees can be ordered in the form of a coffee letter.
